Over the last years I have been  feeling my way into a style of gardening that I feel more and more comfortable with. In the early days I was much influenced by Russell Page and Vita Sackville-West (as many of us were!) and the wonderfully unique approach of Beth Chatto and I think I am growing towards a synthesis of the formal and the informal that is very much my own. Many of the plants that I use in my gardens come from Beth Chatto’s inspirational plant nursery.

More and more I work at producing borders and plantings that delight in all sorts of different ways throughout a long season, partly by giving a structure and rhythm of evergreen box or trees but also in the diversity of the plants. (Even though I am particular to plant in sympathy with the origin of individual species).

I work with a good friend and colleague, Roger Balmer, and many of the hardscape pictures on the site will be as a result of our collaborative design. The planting is my own, in most cases literally! My thanks to everybody else who helps me and makes it possible.
